Transparent blocking

Twitter has a new policy to comply with court mandated gag orders. The key pointsblocked content is localised on a country level jurisdiction onlyit is marked as blocked but the content is not "removed"the court order is automatically cross-referenced Elsewhere the role of rebuttal is noted, with the importance highlighted of referral to the…See More

The Rudeness of Web 2.0 (nagg, nagg, nagg)

Got a random invite from a SNS claiming a mate "is following you on XXXX.XX! Wondering who else is following you?  If you do not want to follow back, please ignore this email. " Upon querying such mate he related that tried it a while ago so must have been an automated response. The problem with a business model which relies on having more connections is where to acquire them (and more importantly are unique). Sending out invites ostenstably on authority of the sender is NOT A GOOD GESTURE…See More

Trade Secrets v Secret Trading

The ever amusing IPKat has stumbled upon the fact that trade secrets are more prevalent than patents. In contrast to the industrial property which can be alienated from inventors (as in on-sold separately not beamed into outer space), trade secrets are:highly contextual and also subject to sudden death (independent discovery)proprietary (in sense of tying employees to production)to…See More

I Am where I Am

Geographical indicators are one of the lesser known IP rights but I suspect that with wide-spread GPS, geotagging and smart cameras, there will soon be an avalanche of legal verbiage. Some companies have managed to tap into local passions, small businesses inveil…See More

From Consent of the Governed ... to Discontent of the Govenors

A recent book pointed out the lack of regulatory nounce have left commercial entities hold potentially life or death decisions. The case was given where Yahoo surrendered private information on a Chinese citizen. Not to mention the thousands of requests under the US Patriot Act. As the author points out"The reality is that the…See More

Semantic Tagging - Chain of Understanding

@MoJoe has a commentary on TagClouds which points out the link between tags (forming a semantic landscape) and users.tag clouds accrete over time when one or more people associate a set of {terms} with a focus (anything that carries meaning)these terms serve as carriers for concepts such as {ideas of aboutness, origin, or purpose, descriptive labels, ...};proximity, size, color or…See More

Promotor v Inhibitor (or Right or Rebuttal)

One observation is that most internet links tend to be affirmative. This is natural as the positive energy gained from liking or retweeting a comment reinforces the source (feel good factor). However, this makes Web 2.0 prone toastro-turfing (fake grass-root support)echo chamber (reinforcing…See More

Welcome to the Knowledge Rights Forum!

If you care about how knowledge and data is managed in the Internet age, you've come to the right place!

Search engines, social networks, advertisers, publishers, governments, corporates big and small - technology now lets them collect and manipulate facts you care about in ways they never could before. Most is for our benefit, but you and I need to keep watch, discuss the issues and find ways to "keep the bastards honest" (please pardon the Australianism).

This is a big issue with many facets...
  1. Freedom of Information - and its flip-side, privacy and protection.
  2. Ownership - who gets to control what's revealed, and used, about you and the things you care about.
  3. Equality of access - this also means ensuring that everyone can be heard.

This forum has groups for each of these, and a Manifesto group for discussing the aims and principles of this forum. Please join one or more and share your thoughts.

You'll also find groups for discussing wik.me - a community-built map of public knowledge. wik.me is a new way to bring together and to discover facts. It's an attempt to solve many of the issues discussed here.

We look forward to reading your comments!
